Christmas in Norway

In the days before Christmas we buy presents, food, clothes and everything we need to celebrate a traditional Norvegian Christmas.

Regarding what we eat, it differs from family to family. Some one pork rib (“ribbe” in Norwegian) or lamb rib that has been smoked, the rib is divided into small parts and steamed (“ pinne kjøtt” in Norwegian) other families eat “lutefisk”. These three are the most typical kinds of Norwegian Christmas food.

In the morning of Christmas Eve our parents and other grown ups do their housework and start making breakfeast. After we have eaten breakfeast they start to make dinner. Sombody goes to church, other stay home and make food. Children watch tv or maybe they are out and play with other children. They wait and wait and become impatient. Everybody has a Christmas tree and maybe a St. Claus (“julenisse” in Norwegian) in their house.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE MAY 17???

Denmark ruled Norway for 400 years.

Therefore we wanted to be independent.

We got our own constitution on May 17 in 1814.

The rich people gathered at Eidsvold and made the constitutution of Norway.

The constitution was signed May 17 1814, that’s why we celebrate May 17.

Nicolay Wergeland helped make the contitution.

His son, Henrik-Arnold Wergeland he is a famous poet. He wanted children (and grown-ups) to celebrate May 17. He did not want military parades.

Therfeore children walk in a parade on May 17.
