GUY FAWKES DAY

Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated on 5th November. It is in  remembrance the king of England at the time of Guy Fawkes, who was almost blown up by Guy Fawkes and his friends in 1605. They put gunpowder under the houses of Parliment. They were caught and hung. We celebrate Guy Fawkes Day by having fireworks parties. Fireworks are for sale at the supermarkets and bigger stores at least two weeks prior to Guy Fawkes day. Most people have family and friends around for supper and the lighting of the fireworks. Sometimes a big bonfire is made and lit. A "GUY"-- a straw man is made and burnt on the bonfire. Sometimes the local city councils will hold a huge fireworks display with thousands of fireworks being lit. When our parents were small, children used to take the guys around the houses on a cart or wagon singing " Guy, Guy. Guy!  Stick him up high!    Stick him on a lamp-post and there let him die!" People would give  them a few coins that they would buy fireworks with.

Christmas in New Zealand

Christmas in New Zealand.

At Christmas the children are having their main holiday. The weather is hot and warm.

On Christmas Day the children wake up an find a sotking at the end of the bed with lots of yummy chocolates and sweets and little toys.

Sometimes they get breakfast in bed. In the morning they spend time with their parents. The children open their presents.

Some people go to church and sing carols.

For Christmas dinner New Zealand children love to eat turkey, chicken, bacon, peas, potatoes, figgy pudding, lamb, pavlova, pork ,trifle, corned beef, lamb's tails, chops, asparagus, tomatoes, strawberries and cherries.

Some people meet at home to eat their dinner with their relations. Other people go to the beach and have a picnic or they have a barbeque. Some families go to another city or town to have a Christmas dinner with their friends. Other families go to a hotel for dinner.

Other families are already on their summer holiday ,so Christmas is spent in a camping ground.

One thing that the class love to think about is:

New Zealand is the first country to have Christmas Eve so Santa Claus comes to us first. So. while you are sleeping with your stocking at the end of your bed, children in New Zealand are feeling full of lovely Christmas dinner, and are playing with all their new toys.

A very Merry Christmas to you all

Love from

Mrs Emmett and the children of Room Eight Wanganui East Primary School.
