Saint Nicholas Day

In Hungary we celebrate St. Nicholas' Day on 6th December. Children clean their boots and put them in the window and at night St. Nicholas brings gifts and puts them into the boots. He usually brings chocolate, candies, nuts and apples in special little sacks. He brings these presents only for good children and for the bad ones he brings birch (rod) and pieces of coal.

At school we have our own 'Mikulas' and bogey-men who help him to distribute the presents. We like it when there is snow on St. Nicholas Day because he always comes on a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Here are two of the little rhymes we sing about St. Nicholas

There are lot of sweets in your sack.
Red apples and hazel nuts,
Come to our place we 're waiting for you
You are nice and kind St. Nicholas.

Here is coming St. Nicholas
His boots are made of ice
His coat is made of snow
His beard is waving
