SPECIAL EVENTS
On Thursday, September 28, 2007, our class participated in a field day experience with other fifth grades in Delta County. This day is known by many as "Ag Day." We made four stops.
The first stop was at the U.P. State Fairgrounds where we each got to make a piece of homemade paper to take home with us.
Our second stop was at Miron's Dairy Farm in Cornell. We learned a great
deal about the dairy industry. We learned about milking techniques and the
ways farmers work with the land to prevent pollution and erosion. We got
to pet newborn calves. We also learned that the milk from Miron's cows is
bottled at the Jilbert Dairy in Marquette within 48 hours or less from the time
it leaves the cows. It never touches the air until we open it.
Our third stop was at the Escanaba Waste Water Treatment Plant on Willow Creek
Road in Escanaba. We learned how waste water from the City of Escanaba
comes into the plant and is put through a number of processes to purify it until
it is finally piped into Little Bay de Noc. We looked at a lot of
impressive machinery.
Our last stop was at the Delta County Recycling Center at the Delta County Landfill. We learned about the various kinds of things we can recycle in our area as well as things that are considered hazardous. It was amazing to see how many products can be made from recycled items.
It was a beautiful day. It looked like it might rain in the morning, but the sun came out and it got warm. The students (and their teacher!) learned a lot of useful information which we can now apply to all subject areas.
We extend a big THANK YOU to all of the people who put in so much time and effort to make this a great learning experience for our kids. These people showed us real-life applications for our learning. We would also like to thank the parents who came with us.
