AFTER-SCHOOL / SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
a Strictly Free and Volunteer Program
All those in the 1st - 5th grade are welcome as participants.
All those in 6th - 12th grade are welcome as teen volunteers.
All adults ages 18 - 110 are too welcome to assist families WITH
EDUCATIONAL alternatives to daycare through funding or volunteerism.
We offer community strengths regardless of family composition, cultural background or other individual differences.

Ř Field Trips:
o
A field trip is planned for most weeks.
o
All children are expected to arrive at Jones School Room
#119 on time.
o Sorry, the Data bus will not wait long for late arrivals.

Unearthing
Insects
June 22 – June 25
Children enjoyed lots
of creative learning about different types of insects in our area.
We learned with Buggy Corners,
Flies and Spiders, and Splat-U-Later Games all week.
One of our Leaders, DC
especially enjoyed a water balloon bath from the entire ABCD group.
Pat Landry helped us
learn about the metamorphosis of Monarch butterflies.
During a walk to Van
Cleve Park we were able to catch and observe bugs.
We learned what bugs
eat and where they live.
A trip to Fayette
helped us to realize how long insects have been with us.
They found that the
bugs have been here way too long !!!


Week 2: (3 Days)
(Short
week due to July 4th Weekend)
Save
& Buy / Dollars & Cents
June 29 – July 1
Children enjoyed making
their own handmade bank.
We learned where money
originated and how to make and save money.
Children visited Gladstone’s
Bay Bank saw the facility including the secret vault.
Each received a new
Presidential gold coin from the Bank President.
We learned you can make your
own homemade ice cream, play doe
and gak(Silly Putty®)
to save money.
The Children were able to
earn funny money all week and spend it at the 2 ABCD specialty stores
named TOYS “R” IN &
DC~AN~TANISHA’S TREASURE CHEST.

Week 3: (4 Days)
Health & Career
Development Grades 4-6 / Smart Start good decision-making Grades K-3
July 6 – July 9
K-3 grade Children learned
to make great choices while
3-6 grade Children are
learned about health and career choices with fun games and activities.
A bead craft was presented
so as to encourage entrepreneurship at a young age.
We visited Bay College and
learned fun facts about our future career choices.
The Nursing department gave
us a great example of how germs spread, to teach about health.
Trooper Seaman from the
Gladstone State Police Post visited with us to speak on
police work as a career. We
also visited the Gladstone Post to see the exciting
cars, computers, equipment
and building they use. Subway has donated a healthy subway tray, while Wendy’s
and MacDonald’s
donated free coupon cards.
Egg and Volcanic Experiments were presented to encourage the study of science
for future scientists. This is in order to promote them as a business in which
to start a young persons career. Sport-cup-stackers were played to encourage
creative learning with fun.

Week 4: (4 Days)
Health & Career Development
Grades 1-2 / Smart Moves good decision-making Grades 3-5
July 13 – July 16
3-6 grade Children learned
to make great choices while
K-3 grade Children learned
about health and career choices with fun games and activities.
A bead craft was presented
so as to encourage entrepreneurship at a young age.
Career Cattle Farming as a
was presented on Tuesday’s field trip. Police and Fire Worker Career’s were
inspired as future choices for students on Wednesday’s field trip.
Sport-cup-stackers was learned and played to encourage creative learning with
fun. Volcanic
reactions were fun to learn about when thinking of becoming a scientist.

Week 5: (4 Days)
Fascinating
Area and U.P. Culture
July 20 – July 23
Day one we visited the local
Veterans Memorial Park and learned of our very own heroes from the Delta County
Area. We also visited the local Senior Center and our tour guide gave us the
facts concerning the painted historical wall mural. Next we visited the local
city hall and the art museum. Day two was filled with interesting facts about
the history of the U.P. and Michigan’s origins, games, crafts, and fun filled
activities were used as the teaching guide for the day. Day three included
learning about Native American culture. Leather medicine pouches were made for
keepsakes, they are to give away or keep. Music and attitudes were discussed
and talked about with the children. On the last day of programming Native
American talking sticks were made with a campfire circle. Every child was given the chance to
participate in the special circle using their special name given at the
beginning of class. Children were happy to participate in the Native American
Dance.

Week 6: (4 Days)
Earth Conservation/Preservation
July 27 – July 30
Day one we were in the
classroom making fun crafts out of reusable supplies. We made
garbage-collecting devices out of pipes and hangers. Then we made earth day
pins out of materials the children collected from Van Cleve Park in Gladstone.
Day two we went for a walk to the boardwalk where Tom Tauzer taught us about
the importance of removing weeds from Gladstone. Then the children got to save
Gladstone from the invasive weed called “Spotted Knapweed.” Day three the
children cleaned up their very own Kids Kingdom and the beach with their
homemade garbage collectors. Day four the kids got to travel to the Ford River
Project where they learned that it was an old Native American burial ground,
and how they reconstructed the site so that the river didn’t totally demolish
it! 
Week 7: (4 Days)
Wilderness Survival Camp
August 3 – August 6
Day one of wilderness camp week we had Denise Messing come in and show
the children all the necessities of camping in the woods. Each child got to try
out some type of camping equipment. Day two we went to the Gladstone campground
where Denise showed us how to set up a tent, how to properly put your camping
supplies in your bag, what filtered water from the lake tastes like, and then
the kids split into teams and got to complete an obstacle course on putting
your camping supplies in your backpack, Last and certainly the BEST part they
got to make smore’s and EAT THEM! Day three Jill Thompson from the Red Cross
came in and we got to bandages all of our broken limbs! Smokey got called out
to a forest fire but he left us a movie to watch with popcorn and some surprise
fun bags. We walked to the park and viewed the beauty and discussed what we
would miss if there were a forest fire in Gladstone. The last day is party day,
ice cream, popcorn and trail mix.

2.Although, we have a 1st - 5th grade participant policy:

We
do allow a parent or guardian to stay along and volunteer with a younger
child(ren).
o
That
guardian could be a neighbor, aunt, grandma/pa, friend or anyone to stay along
with the younger one(s). Sorry, we don’t allow older siblings in 1st-5th
grade as guardians.
3.We are presenting an interactive summer program:
o
We
plan on visiting different parts of Gladstone’s Van-Cleve Park, as well as a
few other places within the city itself.
4.Children and volunteers will need to:
