First Grade Content Expectations

What your child should know by the end of the First Semester:

English/Language Arts

1) Knows color words--(red, blue, yellow, green, purple, orange, brown, black)

2) Knows number words--(zero through ten)

3) Identifies upper and lower case letters

4) Identifies beginning and ending sounds

5) Identifies short vowel sounds in words

6) Blends 3 letter short vowel words

7) Prints first and last name

8) Prints lower and upper case letters in ABC order

9) Uses proper spacing in writing

10) Writes a complete sentence

Math

1) Counts to 100 by: 1's, 5's, 10's

2) Writes to 100 by: 1's, 5's, 10's

3) Recognizes numbers to 100 out of sequence

4) Addition and subtraction facts through 10

5) Recognizes coins: penny, nickel, dime, quarter

6) Recites the days of the week and months of the year in order

What your child should know by the end of the Second Semester:

English/Language Arts

1) After reading a grade level book they can identify main characters and setting

2) Identifies beginning, middle and end of story

3) Identifies short and long vowel sounds in words

4) Identifies contractions

5) Identifies compound words

6) Identifies ch, sh, th, wh

7) Identifies blends

8) Recognizes endings: -s, -ed, -ing, -er, -est

9) Uses proper punctuation and capitalization in sentences

Math

1) Tells time to the half hour

2) Identifies even and odd numbers

3) Identifies fractions of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4

4) Measurement: inch and centimeter

5) Identifies ones and tens up to 99
