What your child needs to know by the end of First Semester (January)

Reading

*Understands that sounds in words are represented by letters of the alphabet.

*Use letter-sound clues to recognize a few one-syllable words.

*Recognize with ease a few basic sight words.

*Follow written text of familiar stories by pointing to known words.

*Tell how authors use pictures to give readers clues about the setting and characters.

*Predict what will happen in a story, based on pictures or portions of the story.

*Form upper and lower case letters.

*Write from left to right and top to bottom leaving space between words.

 

Math

*Count orally to 100 by ones.

*Recognizing numbers 0-30.

*Create, describe, and extend simple number patterns.  Example: 1, 2, __, 4, 5, ___, 7.

*Know and use the common words for the parts of the day (morning, afternoon, evening, night).

*Know the common words for relative time (yesterday, today, tomorrow).

 

What your child needs to know by the end of the school year (June)

Reading

*Begin to match letters and sounds, including first and last consonants* of words.

*Understand that words and sentences are arranged from left to right, top to bottom, front to end of books.

*Begin to know the difference between different types of texts.  Example:  stories, nursey rhymes, poetry, songs.

*Discuss simple story elements in narrative texts: setting, characters, events.

*Retell up to three events from a familiar story in their own words.

 

Math

*Recognize objects in sets up to 30.

*Put in order sets of up to 30 objects and compare using such phrases as "same number, "more than", or "less than".

*Write numerals to 30.

*Count to 30 by 2's and 5's

*Count to 100 by 10's.

*Recite the days of the week and months of the year.
