Rules/Consequences/

Expectations

We have spent a great deal of time discussing the importance of having rules to keep one safe, healthy, loved, and to provide a good learning environment for all.  I have established rules and consequences to ensure that your child is receiving the above mentioned.

The three rules mentioned here are rules that I have an automatic consequence for, and if a child chooses not to follow one of these, they do have an immediate and appropriate consequence related to each:

    1.  Hands, feet, and objects should remain to yourself.

Consequence:  Child sits in time out for time equivalent to half

            of child's age.

    2.  Work must be completed in the time that is given, which is always generous

        at this age.

Consequence:  Child will stay in from recess until he/she finishes the expected

            work.

    3.  Use good manners.  Treat others the way you want others to treat you.

Consequence:  Child will give a verbal apology to whomever they offended.

The seven "guidelines" that I will now mention are expectations.  There is not an immediate "consequence" for these, however, I will remind your child of the expectations verbally once.  If your child still is choosing to disobey the expectations, I will refer your child to the behavioral management chart.

Expectations:

    1.  Raise your hand if you want to talk.

    2. Always do your best work.

    3. Ask 3 people at your table any questions you may have before coming to me.

    4. Help others.

    5. Walk.  No running!

    6. Clean up after yourself.

    7. Use inside voices.

You will be hearing a lot about green "Good Behavior" cards from your child.  It's part of a system that helps students take responsibility for their own behavior in the classroom.

Here's how it works:  I have created a list of rules for behavior (mentioned above).  I then will set up a chart to track each student's success.  Everyone begins the day with green "Good behavior" cards in their pockets on the chart.  Students who forget to follow the rules must replace their green cards with yellow, orange, or red cards.

*A green card means "You're doing great!"

*A yellow card means "Warning!  Pay more attention to your behavior!"

*An orange card means "You have a consequence."  (Loss of 1/2 of afternoon

            recess)

*A red card means that I will be taking action that will best alleviate the problem.

Discipline is always a tough thing for me!  However, I know that rules and consequences are necessary in order to provide a "love for learning" atmosphere.  When if reading this, you have some comments or concerns, please let me know.
