READING
![]()
The dyslexic program is the foundation of the reading instruction in the resource room. It is a highly structured, phonetic-based reading program. Skills are taught using hands-on techniques such as sand trays and arm tapping.
Five sight words are introduced each week using music or chants. The five words from the previous week are added to the Word Wall. These words are "read" at least once a week.
Each student is tested individually on the dyslexic red word list at the beginning of the school year. He/she is then given a list of words to learn based on their need. The children are drilled weekly on their words and given stickers for each word learned. They are encouraged to improve their sight word vocabulary by practicing at home and reading the list to a partner.
The
Houghton Mifflin reading program is the basal series used in the resource
room. It is the same series that is used in the general education
classrooms. The children will read one to two stories per week at their
instructional level. Comprehension strategies will be taught at this time.
