Reading Strategies for Developing Readers

*Read to and with your child daily.

*Ask questions when you read.  Who, what, where, when and why are very effective.

*Talk about the order in which things happen throughout the story.

*Make a list of unfamiliar words and talk about what they mean.

*When your child comes to a word he/she doesn't know, try sounding it out.  If that doesn't work then break it into syllables and sound out each syllable.  Use the word "blank" and continue reading the sentence.  Then use the sentence or sentences around it to figure out the word.
