Second Grade Content Expectations

Reading

What your child needs to know by the end of second grade.

Skills

The children learn how to figure out new words using phonics clues from the pictures and the story itself, and other language clues such as syllables and endings.  New vocabulary is taught with each story or article.

Comprehension

The children learn ways to comprehend what they read such as retelling the story, drawing conclusions, predicting what will happen, finding the main idea and details, and learning to tell things in order.

Practice

For about 20-25 minutes a day the whole class reads silently in library books of each child's choice.  I try to encourage the children to choose some books that they can test on for our Accelerated Reading program, but I also like them to read other books of their interest.  The P.T.O. has a point shop three times a year that the students redeem prizes with their AR points

Literature

To increase the children's enjoyment of literature I expose them to many stories from high quality children's books.  Once a teacher has read a book to the class you would be amazed at how many youngsters pick that same book to read themselves.

People form many types of groups such as family, school and community.  They have customs and interests.

People live in neighborhoods in rural suburban or urban areas.  America is a country on the continent of North America.  It has fifty states.  The map of the United States shows, states, oceans, rivers and lakes.

The history of America is introduced by learning about these people places and events:  Native Americans, pilgrims, settlers, and people coming to America from different countries.

People need to have rules to help them get along.  There are home, school and community rules called laws.  We also study government and our capital Washington D.C.

Our neighbors near and far teaches the children about different cultures.
